Wakefield and District Fibromyalgia Support Group - Friendship-Information-Balance-Relaxation-Opportunities
About Us

Wakefield and District Fibromyalgia Support Group was started in May 2010 by June Chivers who suffers from this chronic condition and felt a support group could only help local sufferers.  June acts as coordinator and is the contact between the national head office, the coordinator for Yorkshire and Humberside and the Wakefield group.  In April 2011, June was appointed deputy coordinator for Yorkshire and Humberside.
At the second meeting we elected our Chair  Joanna Tolson, Vice Chair  David Mitchell and treasurer Julie Harris.  The group has now been established for almost two years.
The group has gone from strength to strength and now meets every four weeks at Streethouse Cricket Club.   In between meetings members of the group also meet socially for coffee, meals out, cinema visits etc.
Now it is almost May 2012 and we have just held our AGM with elections so please check out our new site for details of the current committee.

April was more relaxed for the group as we recovered from the event on the 24 then sat back to respond to the requests we had received from that event for information etc.  I also had to collate the feedback forms from attendees and I’m happy to report that 95% were delighted with the day.  Members of the group who had maybe not worked for a while or had given up the idea that they could be useful in the community again were thrilled with their reaction to being involved with such an event.  They all want to help again.  We were all very tired and pain levels went through the roof but we had warned everyone this was likely to happen so we all paced accordingly. On the 10 April ten members went out for a meal at the Old Mill in Horbury which was a lovely relaxing evening especially for those of us who went out the next day too.  Our pacing went a bit wrong there by arranging outings two days running. On the 11 of April ten members of the group went on a barge trip along the canal in Wakefield.   This is a service that is available to all groups and costs £.5.00 per head to include lunch.  I will post details on the site at a later stage.  We laughed all day long as the 10 of us bonded over stories of our teenage selves; husband or lack of husband stories; naughty children or adorable grandchildren stories etc etc.  We laughed when Sharon first put on her life jacket and sashayed to the front of the boat to relax – we laughed even more when she missed the very low bench and landed on her derriere with her legs in the air.  Elaine was kept busy with the camera that day.   We were physically unable to hop on and off the barge to help with the locks so just sat chatting and laughing but we did help to prepare the lunch and made cups of tea for the crew. On the 19 April Joanna and I went to Pinderfields to speak the patients who were just completing their course at the physio department.  Two of our group were on the course so we didn’t have much work to do that day.  Our April meeting was very busy with our AGM; election of the Chair and Vice Chair plus the last class of the Expert Patient Programme.  It wasn’t an ideal situation with so much going on but time constraints meant it had to be as it was.   Our next meeting is on the 22 May so please see the separate page for that.  Our meeting brought us four new members and we are delighted to welcome them to team Fibro. See you all next month and until then take care and look after yourselves. June x
